Danfoss Drives won the prestigious and much-coveted ‘Innovation of the Year’ category at the recent 2017 Energy Awards, held at the London Hilton Hotel on Park Lane.
The outstanding entry from Danfoss Drives, Fuel saving of 38% for Scottish ferries, impressed the judges with the innovative hybridization solution implemented on a CMAL ferry that operates in the Scottish Highlands. This has produced impressive fuel savings of 38%, and a corresponding reduction in emissions.
The Energy Awards celebrate the best energy innovations and highlight technologies that help save energy and money and protect the environment – so the Scottish ferry project implemented using equipment from Danfoss Drives ticked all the boxes!
The ferry uses an innovative propulsion system where diesel engines drive a generator to produce electricity for the electric propulsion motors, as in any typical diesel-electric system. The outstanding extra for the solution from Danfoss Drives is the addition of batteries that can be charged from the generator or from a shore supply. This means that, for much of the time, the vessel can operate entirely on battery power and the diesel engines don’t need to run at all.
“We are delighted that the project grabbed the judges interest and made such a positive impression,” stated Scott Blackwell, Regional Marketing & Communications Northern & Eastern Europe, Danfoss Drives.
“In fact, we were just as delighted as the ferry company is about the huge savings it is making, and the potential for using similar systems in future vessels. There’s no doubt that the Danfoss Drives team that worked on this project did an amazing job, and it’s great to see this recognized,” Mr Blackwell concluded.
